In my review of Purple Wild Shake Gatsby, I made a distinction between straight-up spikes and rounder styles. Here’s some clarification on the difference between the two, based on the old Gatsby hair models.

These are “straight-up” spikes accomplished with Pink Gatsby, though this is perhaps not the best example since a large portion of the sides have been aimed downwards.. Regardless, you can see how the spikes in the middle go up. Straight-up spikes are typical in young Asian hairstyles. It’s not very common in Japanese, Korean, or Taiwanese celebrities, however. The main reason for that is that you need either straight, short hair or time to devote to a hair straightener and lots of hairspray. Straight-up spikes usually point forwards with no part (due to the short hair). This style can make a wide face look skinnier and a short person look slightly taller. |

This, on the other hand, is a “rounder” style. Because of: 1) the longer length of hair and 2) a slight natural wave, the spikes do not (and cannot) go straight up. Of course, this is on the short hair-length end of the spectrum–longer hair styles can still fit in this category, but they generally won’t have spikes. Purple Gatsby is meant for the shorter end to achieve spikes like this, whereas Green or Orange would be used on longer length hair to add texture and lift. Also, round hairstyles are generally parted to the side. Obviously, having sideburns/longer hair on the side will make your head wider overall, so it is advisable to not do this if you have a fat face. |
There can be overlap, of course. Hair can be rounded forward or spiked to the sides. These “categories” aren’t meant to be strict and concrete, but guidelines to help you pick what works best for you. The main difference, however, is in the overall effect on face shape: straight-up gives you vertical height, rounded gives you width.

Both spikes are odd… All hair strands are seperated lol.
Rounded spikes is easy, just apply to roots, and not the ends…. If ur hair dun drop back down, twist the ends down. :3
