NOTE: This product has been discontinued by Sebastian! They replaced it with Sebastian Craft Clay, almost the same but not really. hehe.

First impression

Wow. I’ve bought the 125 g version and the container literally pwns the rest. It’s way bigger than other products in my collection. The container design is pretty unique, the lid is shaped in a Octagon.  With finger thumb prints on the sides, pretty cool.  I’ve used ‘cheap’ Europe products such as: Garnier Fructis, L’oreal Paris, New Wave(also known as ‘Shockwave’ in the UK?)  and got2B. I have used some gel and wax from those brands before. But I did get myself some New Wave Ultimate Effects; Texture & Touch Gum or Clay&Play. The New Wave clay was indeed in a clay-ey color; brown, grey, white mixture-ish. But it was a bit wet. When I opened the Xtah Crude Clay I was amazed. It looked like some light colored mud from the outside. And like all people do, I sniff my products hoping it can please my smelling needs.  But NO! don’t ever smell it. It smells bad, you should probably smell it 1 time for the lolz and then stop for good! The Xtah Crude clay doesn’t have an artificial smell, it smells really “Raw earth” as the description said; good stuff!

The Review

‘Raw earth modeling clay for hair. Creates shapes with a real matte finish.’

Oh hell yeah it’s a rough and tough clay. The directions for this products on the container says: ‘Dig out and rub between hands,………..’. DIG OUT. When I got the clay new and unopened you really had to DIG the clay out, literally. When you finally dug out an okay amount, (fingertop or less) you can smudge it onto your palms and warm it up, rubbing your hands together. I like to put some not ONTO my scalp and not on my roots, but a bit above that (only for medium-long hair) and work the product into your hair. Then when you have an evenly amount spread onto your hair, your done! You can use an additional step if you like. Put some product on your fingers only, not on the palm. Now rub your fingers together and work with your fingers and your fingers only! Now you can do your hair strand by strand and define your layers. Don’t overdo it if you want a natural effect!

You should never ever use this product to do your hair into “CRAZY ASS DEFINED ASN ANIME HAIR SPIKES!!!!1!!1!1!111!!01!”. Why not? Because, this product gives you the minimum shine of all clays I’ve used. And because it’s so matte, you can easily use it for your natural hair and only shape up some bits to define it.  And not for uberspikes for the days you want to “pwn”. Seriously, not.

Pros Cons
Hold is pretty good (only to shape it, not spikes) IT SMELLS BAD!
No shine at all
Usable for all hair lengths, but recommended for medium-long
Very light

Complimenting products:

Get some good smelling minimum shine hairspray and use minimum amounts only for hold and to give it a little tiny bit of shine.

You should use some perfume too, not on your head, on your body.

Conclusion and ratings:

Too bad this Xtah Crude Clay is now discontinued, but if you do ever get the chance to use some, or to obtain some. You should do it.

(BASED ON MY OPINIONS!)

  1. It’s not good at all… it won’t hold. Only gives the soft texture.

  2. I find that my hands still smell like the product for a few hours even after washing them… so iunno if this one is at the top of my “to try” list.

Have you tried the Sebastian Craft Clay? Does it smell better?

    • Wash your hands really good with soap after styling for clean hands. And yeah I do have craft clay, it’s almost the same, but the texture isnt as rough and the color is lighter. There isn’t really a smell onto it, but it doesnt smell as bad as Xtah Crude Clay. Def. worth a try.

  3. I DUNNO~~~~~ if it has bad smell, its kind of a turnoff for girls ya know? x]

    • but generally speaking bad smell in products usually go away after 30 minutes, or if you use hair spray right?

    • usually, but for that 30 minutes you are smelly, and people dont want to be near you! Haha. I get comments all the time about my hair smelling good

  4. dude i gotta try this shi- DAYUUUUUUM

  5. This is the STUFF!
