Defense of The Scalp

Written by: Col

There are a lot of myths out there for what causes dandruff, and yes there are a lot of reasons why you may have dandruff.  One of the hardest battles against dandruff is identifying the root cause, so in this article I’ll tell you what the most common causes of dandruff are and the best ways to battle them..

Causes:

Some of the most common causes of dandruff are as follows:

-Extreme temperatures: can cause your scalp to dry out causing flaking and minor dandruff.

-Fungal problem: caused by Malassezia that live in your hair follicles and feed on fat and oils, keeping your follicles dry, and causing dandruff.

-Not washing your hair frequently enough: can cause a buildup of old dead skin cells piling up and flaking off, and improper use of conditioners can also cause dry scalps

-Allergies to hair products: some chemicals may cause irritation to your head!

-Not combing your hair enough: combing once in a while removes old dead skin cells.

-Alcohol to the scalp: can easily dry out all moisture in your scalp, so use your hair spray wisely.  One easily rule to keep you from hair spraying your scalp is holding the can 1 foot away (12 inches) from your head.

How To Fix It:
Most of the problems mentioned above can be easily fixed by keeping up good hygiene, and by good hygiene I mean washing your hair everyday. Combing and using your conditioner weekly. Make sure all hair products is rinsed out fully.

For fungal and other problems that can’t be fixed by proper hygiene. You may choose to use one of the many anti-dandruff shampoos out there: such as Head and Shoulders. You may have tried it and felt it did not work… what most people don’t know is that there are specific ingredients in the shampoo that battle against dandruff.  For instance, Head and Shoulders uses Pyrithione zinc, a fairly common ingredient that vanquishes dandruff. What most people do not know is that there is more than one chemical out there that helps fend off dandruff.  So far in the market there are  at least 3 well known active ingredients: apart from Pyrithione zinc, there is also Selenium sulfide and Ketoconazole. So if you do have dandruff problems, and one of the chemicals above does not work for you, it is strongly advised to choose another active ingredient.  Not all the active chemicals will be useful because it really depends on the root cause.
